And what a race it was. This years Daytona 500 kick off of the 2006 Nascar season was filled with all the thrills and spills, and attitudes that fans around the country have come to love and expect.
Tony Stewert had blatently forced one car (I don't remember who it was; Brian Vickers- I think) right off the track, sending him across the grass and back up on the track into turn one where he came in contact with the outside wall. Kurt Bush in the Miller lite 2 car had a good day running toward the front most of the race as well as the 8 of Dale earnheardt and Mark Martin who is no longer in the 6 of viagra... I'm not sure what car he is in now.
Jimmy Johnson who also ran up toward the front most of the day was there at the end to take the checkerd flag.
Why is racing such a popular sport? I think it has a lot to do with the specticle of people endangering their lives, but more than that I think people really feel a connection with the driver they've chosen to represent them. Mine used to be Rusty Wallace... I've got to pick another driver now since he's retired... but any one can pick a driver to race for him... from kids of 5 years old to old ladies in their 80's it's real easy to say I want so-and-so to win... and when that driver finally wins, the person is hooked.
People live vicariously through their chosen driver.. when their driver wins, the person wins and can then rub competing family members noses in your victory...
The reasons for chosing a driver are as many as the stars... and why not, the drivers are stars that can burn out in a moments notice on any given Sunday... Just ask Dale Jr..
