Twin City Ham Club (Ouachita Parish)

I attended my first HAM Radio club meeting Tuesday night at 6:30. Located at the Ouachita Parish Fire Training Center in one of many rooms, a group of people numbering approximately 25 met to discuss up and coming events.

Everyone I talked to was very cordial and made me feel welcome. I expressed my desire to obtain an amateur radio technician lisence, and the people I talked to said they’d help me.

I own a 10 meter radio that is set up in a small shed outside my home. You could say the radio-shed is my short-distance-get-away.

I plan on operating CW (continuous wave) morise code, and found out I will probably have better luck with that on 2 meter set ups. 2 meter set ups appears to be what most club members are using, though a few said they occasionally operate 10 meters also.

A few people I remember meeting are Tom (who gave me a ride home), bear (a really big guy who reminds me of one of the soggy bottom boys), Benson, Mary & lynn (I think lynn), and another guy I can’t remember his name… I want to say dave, but I don’t think that’s right.

Anyway, I’d like to make the dates for some of the clubs future activities known, so here they are:

April 26th : Monroe Hamfest
June 28 & 29 Field Day

The public is more than welcome to come out to these events. Check back soon for location details.

The Field Day for this club will take place in Books-a-million parking lot in Monroe.

Thanks to all of you club members who greeted me Tuesday night.

I am a new ham as well, and love CW. I am trying to get my copy speed up to about 13 wpm before I get on the air. So far I almost never hear any CW on the airwaves, probably because my antenna is not so great and I am listening at the wrong times of the day. :(

It sounds from your "OPEC: No more Oil" article that you are peak oil aware. That's great. I would love to meet more peak oil aware hams. I'm out in California Bay Area, but maybe we will QSO one day on HF. :)

Yes, to QSO with you'd be great. I am peak-oil aware, and frankly that worries me because our culture/society is sitting on its hands. To illustrate this: Ford has a commercial out boasting 30mpg on its Probe. My Dads '84 chavette and 74 vw were getting that same milage! It seems to me that with all the advancements made in the past 30 years that should have improved at least a little.

I finally heard some CW on 10 meters Sunday afternoon. It was too fast for me to copy though... at least 20 gpm.
