Louisiana's ARES Operators Gear UP for Gustav

By Daniel Taverne

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) of Northeast Louisiana is gearing up for Gustav’s impact on Ouachita and surrounding parishes. Volunteer communicators across the Deep South are receiving regular updates of Gustav’s progress as well as its forecast tracks.

It’s imperative that we realize the forecast tracks are just that, forecasts and that all residents along the Gulf coast heed the warnings of their respective civil authorities.

In addition to the progress of Gustav, ARES operators are receiving updates concerning emergency shelter locations as well as coordinating information passed down from the State Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

There will be an impromptu meeting of local Amateur radio operators interested in emergency communications Sunday afternoon 8/31 which will cover message formatting and handling standards.

If you happen to stumble across this post and are interested in attending the communications briefings, contact Mack KA5JNL, Carlos KB5YEG or myself for time and place.

Working together we will weather the storm.
