By Daniel Taverne
I, being legally blind, ‘read’ books on tape, and I’ve come to enjoy mysteries that are rooted in native American culture. In one such book, the main character (a musician as well as tribal investigator) played in a band while his wife played something called the Stick game.
The descriptions of the times had by these, and other characters, tantalized me into wishing I could attend such a function. Eventually, I went on the internet and looked up Native American Stickgame information, the search of which introduced me to the Jim Boyd band.
Among many albums, he recorded, "Going to the Stick Games" from which I was lucky enough to hear clips. If you ever get the chance, I recommend listening to this album. It is a wonderful journey into an unfamiliar culture where fun and companionship intermingle with tradition and storytelling.
I subsequently looked Jim Boyd up on Youtube and Myspace. The youtube link above will bring you to a song he recorded called, "Inchelium" which, according to the song, is the town where he is from. On Youtube you can also do a search for his song, "A Million Miles Away". It is an interesting song dealing with Mother Earth and the feelings of the person singing.
The Myspace page above, I believe is his band page which has a playlist of interesting songs, but I particularly like the 2 song play list on what I believe is his personal page. This pate is, http://www.myspace.com/jimboyd . Give it a look over, and comment on what you think.
Please feel free to sign my guestbook. Thank you.
