Evening News in the President's Corner on Gulf Oil Disaster?

  • I watched the CBS nightly news with Katie Curric (sp?) this evening and listened to that network’s take on the Gulf oil disaster.

As I watched, I made a few observations.
    1. Yesterday I think the entire nation saw that Pelican stuck in the sludge. That image was one of those few images that come along and activates people. CBS realizes this, so tonight they “saved” that bird. Well I say “Thank God for that, the crisis is over!” Seriously, I’m glad that bird was saved, but I hope that knowledge doesn’t stop folks form getting involved in what’s happening. BP and the President need to have their feet held to the fire!
    2. The network attempted to gloss over the administration’s and the president’s response to the situation. We heard the president talking tough, mentioning BP’s earnings to stock holders and such while fishermen in the gulf suffer… I say, words are cheap, Mr. President! You are the President! You get people down there cleaning! Get Federal prisoners, you get the national guard, you get the white house staff, what ever it takes. You put the coast guard and the worlds oil tankers down there sucking up oil, and you don’t wait till BP agrees…. You do it and you send them the bill!

    3. I noticed the network’s man-on-the-street sound-bite. He stated the Presidents hands are tied. I say, poor Mr. President. Why don’t we all expect less of him. He’s only the President for crying out loud. What can he do? Please! I refer you to observation 2 above.

We the people have got to do what we can. We’ve got too much political posturing and finger pointing going on.

    4. One last thing I noted. The network discussed the amount of oil spewing into the Gulf. They cited BP will be liable for fines related to how much oil is released. My immediate thought was, “Does it matter?” It doesn’t matter because every bit of oil needs to be cleaned up, regardless of the amount. BP knows this, that’s why they are using chemical dispersants.

And what is the story with the chemical dispersants? First they are using them, then the EPA tells them stop, but they don’t. Tonight CBS said the government is okaying their use. We were told tonight the chemical dispersants are toxic, but not as toxic as the oil. I thought, We already have the oil, and we will continue to have the oil despite the dispersants.

The dispersants don’t’ make the oil go away, it keeps the oil from massing into large pools on top of the water. BP I assume would love to see the dispersed oil carried out into the middle of the Atlantic. Hide the problem until it becomes someone else’s problem… seems to be their take.
